Unknown: Fibroids are benign tumors of the uterus. The exact cause is unknown but it can be familiar and it is more common in African Americans. It also can be stimulated by female hormones.

No one knows: While no one knows what causes fibroid tumors, they do grow with hormonal stimulation (i.e. estrogen, progesterone). That's why they often grow during pregnancy and why they tend not to be an issue for women in menopause.
