Gout, infection...: There are many possibilities. Gout is a common cause of swelling and is accompanied by redness, warmth and pain. A nail infection can also cause swelling and pain. A sprain of the joint may cause swelling too.

Many possible causes: Some causes of toe swelling can include localized issues such as arthritis, infection, ingrown toe nails, trauma (fracture, sprain, and tendonitis, tight shoes) gout, and side effects to medication. Have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate treatment.
