A member asked:

Are focal seizures caused by hormonal change?

Could be provoked: The hormonal issues can increase likelihood of seizure activity, but are not the underlying cause. Therefore, you need to be evaluated for a focal brain lesion, metabolic imbalance, toxins, medication side effects, contact with recreational drugs, vitamin deficiencies, chronic infections, etc.

Not directly: In certain people with epilepsy hormones affect the likelihood of having a seizure (most common around menses but other patterns exist), but the hormones don't cause epilepsy per se. Thankfully, or we'd all likely have epilepsy!
