A member asked:

Can you tell me what happens when there is an increase in calcitonin.?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Nothing: In humans, an elevated calcitonin has no physiological effect (just as loss of calcitonin in thyroidectomy has no physiologic effect). See a doctor to make sure you don't have a thyroid nodule. High calcitonin can be a marker for a rare thyroid cancer. If you have a thyroid nodule, it needs to be evaluated by an endocrinologist.
