To get all the benefits from smoking cessation for your surgery including decreased risk of pulmonary complications and better wound healing, it is optimal to stop smoking about 6 weeks before surgery. Stopping smoking right before surgery or only a few days before surgery can actually result in increased secretions in your lungs and coughing after surgery especially if intubated during surgery.
