Human vs synthesized: rhIGF-1 protein is synthetic, made in E. coli bacteria and sometimes yeast that have been modified in the lab to have the gene for human IGF-1, enabling them to produce IGF-1. Plain IGF-1 protein is endogenous, coming from humans, but this is not used nearly as much anymore as the rhIGF-1 (trade name is Increlex).
