Heat: Radiation from microwave oven heats up water molecules. It is far more common for people to be burned by hot food or drinks than directly burned by the microwave radiation. Not really: Microwaves are pretty safe. Over the life of one microwave, it may give off 5 miliwatts of microwave radiation per square centimeter within 2 inches of the microwave, which is very well below what the FDA deems unsafe. If you stand 20 inches away from the microwave in use, the radiation is only one-hundredth of the value given off at 2 inches. It is unlikely you will have detrimental effects.
