Rib head pain: The pain may be caused by inflammation of the rib head at the insertion point on the spine. Heavy lifting can trigger this type of pain. Chiropractors are good at realigning the rib head and reducing or eliminating the pain. Occasionally a pain management physician is required to give a cortisone injection at the insertion site. Stop smoking and reduce drinking to speed recovery.

Back or rib?: You may have a bad back strain, or could have cracked a rib. Try moist heat to area, OTC pain meds. If no better next day or two, see your doctor. Good luck!
