Stress Depigmentatio: Stress can lead to earlier depigmentation of hair that is already genetically predisposed to graying. However, in general, hair loss is more associated with stress than hair graying.

A 36-year-old female asked:

I get a grey hair only when I am really stressed. Why?

Stress is a factor: Graying of hair is related to genetic predisposition. Age of initial graying is largely a matter of genetics. However stressors: nutritional deficiencies, chemotherapy, traumatic head injuries, low vitamin B levels, zinc deficiency, severe illness, surgery & marked emotional stress may impact earlier depigmentation in people who are already predisposed to gray hair. Aging is a significant factor.
