Bronchitis: One of the well documented responses to tobacco smoke is suppression of motion of the cilia hair cells which constantly sweep material up out of the lung air passages. This suppression ↑es over time so that lung infections become more & more common over the years. Cough is the backup clearance mechanism, though less effective. Air passage irritation also drives wheezing, another mechanism to clear.
