Be healthy: Keep your blood pressure under control. Stay normal body weight. Eat a healthy, well balanced diet. Don't smoke. Don't do illicit drugs. Exercise regularly. Wear your seatbelt. And don't forget to brush your teeth and floss.

Sometimes can't: Some factors that we know include coronary artery disease, viruses, genetic disorder, pregnancy, alcohol, endocrine abnormalities (thyroid in particular), and many others. To prevent decompensation of the chf, the biggest factor is salt. Salt causes fluid retention, which the weakened or stiff heart muscle can not work with. Diuretics, blood pressure control, habitual exercise, healthy wt. Help.
