Probably not: A painful swollen area in the armpit (axilla) is often due to a swollen lymph gland or an abscess( collection of infection and pus). Hiv can cause swollen lymph glands but they are usually non-tender. You should see your physician to examen the area. If it is an abscess, a small incision, after numbing the skin, to let the pus drain will usually cure it. Don't attempt to do this yourself!
