A member asked:

Difference between fetal spina bifida and anencephaly?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Very different: Anencephaly is the abscence of a closed cranial cavity (head) and implies incomplete brain development/function. Essentially, anencephaly is being born without functioning brain. Spinal bifida is an incomplete closure of the neural tube. There is no implication of brain development or brain function. While there may be paralysis in spina bifida, the brain can function normally in many cases.
