General anesthesia: Jaw alignment surgery, or orthognathic surgery, is routinely performed under general anesthesia. Some minor jaw adjustment procedures, such as a genioplasty (chin advancement), chin implant or jaw implant, can be done under intravenous sedation without requiring full-blown general anesthesia. However, most jaw procedures require general anesthesia performed by an anesthesiologist or rn anesthetist.
