Not sure: There have not been any controlled studies of this medication past continuous use for 12 months. If you take it for acid reflux the fda has only approved its use for 4 weeks as a short term treatment. For ulcers, treatment can be up to 16 weeks. Long term effects may include swelling in the limbs, liver damage, muscle and joint aches, thyroid dysfunction, bone fractures, and blood disorders.

Yes, ↓ Bone Strength: Study pi (prescribing insert): http://www.Aciphex.Com/pdf/aciphexpi.Pdf, http://en.Wikipedia.Org/wiki/rabeprazole and google "rabeprazole side effects long term" for some clues. As always, individual outcomes vary. Like most prescription medications, rabeprazole is just a single molecule, chosen for track record of benefits/downside ratio &simplifies complexity of molecules/patient interaction.
