A member asked:

Why does it take so long for the redness from a popped zit under the lip border to go away? does daily silicone gel for a few weeks help?

It is because: A zit is a localized skin infection. The redness at the base is caused by this local infection. It will take time for the body to clear this infection, and once it does, the redness should start to resolve. Simple soap and water to keep the area clean should help speed the process along.

Inflammatory Respons: The redness is due to lots of capillaries bringing in red ; white blood cells, nutrients ; removing waste to attack, control ; heal an inflammatory reaction to the material within the lesion. Pressure ; popping the lesion spreads irritating cytokines into the surrounding intercellular spaces, accentuating the inflammatory response. Additionally, bacteria on the skin now have better access.
