Not necessarily: In most cases, eye floaters are due to the natural process of the gel-like substance in your eye losing some of its clarity. However, the gel can pull and tug on the retina and can cause a retinal tear or detachment during the process. The chances are small but it's still possible. Get a dilated eye exam, if you have new floaters, flashing lights, or a dark curtain coming over your vision.

Not usually: Vitreous detachment happens to all of us, eventually. The great majority of the time it does not cause problems. In the very small majority of patients it can cause a retinal tear or detachment. If you are experiencing symptoms such as flashing light or new floaters, you should see an eye doctor as soon as possible
