It depends on why: It depends on why your knee is swollen. There can be many reasons. We usually take x-rays or other imaging, remove the fluid from the knee using a needle and then have the fluid analyzed. These can help explain why your knee is swollen. We look a cell counts, look for crystals and culture for infection. This helps direct your therapy.
