A member asked:

Docs, could a cold make only 1 ear hurt?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: The congestion of a cold will often cause your eustachian tube on one or both sides to swell.Once swollen, you can trap fluid behind the ear drum and this can be in a vacuum. This can cause discomfort.
