Infections: Many infections, both viral and bacterial, can cause throat pain and spleen enlargement. EBV virus (Mononucleosis) is a viral infection that can cause these symptoms, and more, but usually the spleen will not get large for at least a week or two after the onset of the illness. Spleen enlargement should always prompt follow up with your physician.
