Acute & chronic HIV: When someone is just infected with HIV, the immune system can take a 'real hit' and opportunistic infections like 'thrush' can occur. Otherwise, it's usually much later in the course of HIV-1 infection that something like thrush will show up -- after the immune system has been degraded for some time. There are other 'mouth infections' that can occur with HIV. Best to see your primary doc or ID doc
