Depends: Blood transfusions while safe, are not without risk and shouldn't be taken lightly. A lot of factors are considered when evaluating the need for a transfusion, so it not based on an isolated value. (hemoglobin or hematocrit).

Assess each case: Generally, a hemoglobin less than 8.0 gm/dl will require a transfusion if the patient is symptomatic (shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, etc.). However, each case has to be assessed individually regarding need for transfusion. Patients with chronic anemia will acclimate to their condition and may not need transfusions as acutely.
