A member asked:

Can excessive salt on all my food cause diarrhea? i seem to have really bloated/cramp/burning/watery diarrhea once every month, maybe less sometimes.

Diarrhea with Salt: To my knowledge salt does not cause diarrhea. Diarrhea is more likely due to a gluten allergy or lactose intolerance. To check for those try eating gluten free for a week or so and see. To check for lactose intolerance try to taking lactaid and cut out dairy products for a week and see.

IBD: Sounds like irritable bowel syndrome. A gastroenterologist can help you to exclude other causes.

Sodium and diarrhea: No, excess sodium will not cause diarrhea. You will absorb it. What you eat may be causing these occasional symptoms.
