Liver Infection: Your mom is in 80-90's. Liver infection can lead to malfunction(jaundice) and rarely failure. The doctor caring for her will help you. The liver swells with infection or inflammation, so that is not a good or bad sign per se. At her age, she is more at risk. Talk to her doctor, and don't be afraid to ask all your questions.
