An Ankle Ache Answer: Often following surgery where hardware (screws or plates) have been placed there can be areas of non-union or inadequate healing. This can lead to micro-movement with activity and over time lead to irritation and inflammation of the periosteum (bone covering) and pain. Additionally, the surrounding structures (muscle and connective tissue) can become inflamed and irritate nerve endings.
