Non specific test: Decades ago Dr Mason Guest realized that red cells in a tube would fall at an accelerated rate when they were coated with proteins created by inflammation. That evolved into the sed rate, erythrocyte sedimentation rate. It is often high during chronic infections, or inflammation from any cause. By itself it is a simple indicator like fever.
