Not really: A varicose vein is one which has dilated due to increased "back pressure" in the vein. Several reasons, but commonly the one way valves have become incompetent , so gravity pulls the blood back down causing pressure. To many, these may be unsightly, but don't cause symptoms such as burning, itching, and a heavy, achy feeling. If yours do bother you, talk to your doc.

Yes: In general, the answer is yes. A varicose vein is a defective faulty vein that no longer carries blood in the proper direction, allowing blood to "pool" in the leg & ultimately leading to pressure buildup or venous hypertension in the leg. The more veins that are faulty the worse the condition. Varicose veins almost always worsen with time & lead to worsening of the leg circulation.

Veins not normal.: Varicose veins are not normal and are due to malfunctioning valves of usually the saphenous system. Although varicose veins may not cause symptoms, they tend to get progressively worse and over time can cause a multitude of symptoms. Unhealthy is not a good term for varicose veins since they may not affect one's health but they are certainly abnormal.

Yes: Varicose veins are caused by valve problems that allow blood from deep high-pressure veins to enter low-pressure veins just under the skin. These veins enlarge, (varicose), leak fluid through the walls (swelling), letting blood through (discoloration) and finally nutritious arterial blood cannot enter an area of the skin resulting in ulcers. It is treated by laser ablation.

All are abnormal: Varicose veins come from a problem with vein valves that causes blood to stagnate. They can cause pain, heaviness after prolonged standing, and occasionally blood clots or bleeding. They can be managed in many ways, from support hose to surgical intervention. They should not be ignored. SPider veins are abnormal but unless associated with varicose veins are usually only a cosmetic concern.

Vein wall weakness: Varicose veins often result from vein wall weakness, allowing veins to become tortuous and distended. Often they can be asymptomatic for years, but at times can cause skin changes resulting from poor blood flow and inflammation. In a number of cases this could lead to ulcerations; however there's no way of predicting who will develop advanced disease from varicose veins.
