Catatonia: Catatonia is of 2 general types: slowed or absent movements and inability to talk (stupor) vs frenetic activity (frenzy). The mutism in stupor is not "selective" or volitional. Bipolar mania can present with extremely rapid speech and movements that are initially goal directed but can become progressively more disorganized. Severe bipolar depressive episodes may have slowed behavior and mutism.
