Definetely: Chronic pain does not have biological utility and usually does not point the clinician in the direction of underlying pathology. It appears and it's a proven fact that psychosocial factors, include anxiety an depression, are the forces that drive any given persistent pain sufferer toward chronic pain syndrome.

It can: Chronic pain is hard to deal with. Both anxiety and depression can accompany it. Effective management involves investigating and treating the source of chronic pain, and also addressing the associated anxiety and depression. One shot will not cover all those bases, though -- except perhaps temporarily.
