A member asked:

My sister in law's baby died in utero around 16w. no amniotic fluid but she didn't have leaking. they said fetus was dehydrated. how so? kidney issue?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Could be: Amniotic fluid includes urine made by the fetus during pregnancy. Those that have poorly formed or no kidneys or a severe blockage to their urine outflow, will not create enough amniotic fluid. The fetus remains so tightly shrinked wrapped, that they also can have poor lung growth (no room). These can survive pregnancy but die soon after birth. A loss early in pregnancy may indicate another issue.
