Quickly: Gabapentin (brand name neurontin) will be effective in about an hour after taking the first dose and lasts about 6-7 hours. If you have constant pain, then you will need to take it three or four times a day. The dose that patients need varies a lot, so if the medication does not help after several doses, call your physician to see about adjusting the dose.

Neurontin (gabapentin) effective: It can take up to about a month to see the full effect of any particular dose. Most people find that a dose of around 1500 mg per day is beneficial. Some people require higher doses for the best benefit.
