A member asked:

If someone stops taking mental health medication how long does it take to actually get out of their body completely?

Depends: Every medication has a half life which is the time it take to eliminate half of the medicine in your body. For some medications that is 1 hour and for others it is a week. There is no way to know without knowing which specific medications you are on.

It depends : The class if medication is important. Most psychotropic medications have to be weaned off to allow your body to adjust to lower doses and to prevent withdrawal from abrupt discontinuation. Weaning period takes over 2-4 weeks in most cases but it's best to consult with a mental health expert. If the reason to discontinue a med is for lack of therapeutic effect, sometimes a new med is started.
