Uncommon but true.: There are two processes - tolerance and tachyphylaxis - whereby the body gets used to a medication, rendering the medication less effective. Not common effect of medications in general, but it happens.

Antibiotic Resistant: Dr Giannone discussed tolerance and tachyphylaxis, BUT also consider antibiotic resistance as another phenomenon in which the body "gets used to medication" The scenario commonly seen today is the use of antibiotics haphazardly for viral upper respiratory infections. Antibiotics should be used for bacterial infections and saved for clinical scenarios that fit.
