Dental problem: Go to dentist for dental cleaning to remove all traces of plaque and tartar. Then start brushing at least twice a day. An electric toothbrush may help you brush. Flossing daily is a must. You may need an antiseptic mouth rinse, if recommended by your dentist. Gingivitis usually clears up after a thorough professional cleaning — as long as you continue to follow a program of good home care.

Possibly infection: When something red, swollen and tender appears suddenly, the most likely thing is an infection. Other possibilities are trauma, tumor, or an inflammatory process. You should get this checked out since oral infections can be very serious if not treated appropriately.
