Skin infection: Infections are caused by bacteria or viruses. Skin infections often occur when there is break in the skin for some reason. Your body creates an inflammatory response to fight the infection and this results in redness and swelling in the area and causes the area to be painful.

Infection: The signs of inflammation are redness, swelling, pain and tenderness, and warmth at the site. If it is due to infection there may be rapid extension of these signs and possibly discharge.
