Virus vs allergy/PND: Your symptoms are most likely from a virus which can cause coughing especially in night time cool air. If this is a chronic condition it can sometimes be due to allergies or postnasal drip but less common. Drink plenty of fluids, try zinc lozenges at outset of discomfort in throat/virus starting. Get plenty of rest. See MD if fever develops or severe sore throat.

Depends on cause: The key to getting rid of the cough is to figure out what is the cause of the cough. This detective work starts with taking a good history to help decide if it is infectious, asthma, reflux or chronic post nasal drip or a combination of these. If it has been a problem for more than 7-10 days it is time to see your doctor.
