Latching problems: In general, try to put baby to breast at FIRST cues of hunger, express some milk onto the nipple so baby can taste it during root and latch, experiment with different holding positions. Consider a nipple shield if nipples are flattened. There are many causes for latching problems in the newborn, and direct observation and coaching from your pediatrician or lactation consultant would be ideal.

Get a consult: I wish we could virtual consult this one. If his mouth is small or he's not opening up you can try to gently stroke the bottom of his feet, his cheek, etc. The mouth has to be sufficiently open to achieve a good latch. Sometimes problems with latch are related to the tongue. Have his mouth and tongue evaluated by your pediatrician. If all else fails, La Leche League is a great resource.
