Mucous: Mucous is a normal part of the tear film of the eye. When the eye is irritated, it makes more mucous. The mucous gathers in the inner corner during sleep and forms the "dirt" you describe. If this is a problem, try using some lubricating ointment at bedtime. If this does not work, see an ophthalmologist for management.
