A member asked:

I'm having adrenal insufficiency symptoms but inconclusive lab results, what does this mean?

Symptoms: Hi. Symptoms of adrenal insufficiency are also symptoms of many other things. No symptoms of adrenal insufficiency are SPECIFIC for adrenal insufficiency. Adrenal insufficiency is very rare. Often a provocative test is required, and depending on your doc's index of suspicion, he/she may not feel a provocative test is warranted. Get a second opinion from an experienced endocrinologist if you want.

Symptoms: I agree with Dr Knecht that this is a very rare disease, but as a general rule if adrenal glands are not working you would have low BP-causing dizziness when you try and get up, fatigue, poor appetite, skin changes. But these same symptoms can also be seen in other states too.

Probably not adrenal: In true adrenal insufficiency, lab tests are strikingly abnormal, not inconclusive (very high ACTH is the key test). Cortisol levels are often not reliable. If you are seeing an endocrinology doc and they are worried that it might be your adrenal they could give you some hydrocortisone for 1-2 weeks to see if you feel any better but I am guessing that your symptoms are not adrenal-related.
