Depends: This depends on how much you drink and the period of time over which you drink it; also, it correlates with sex (males metabolize better than females); how much you've eaten; food delays the absorption of alcohol; it depends on your tolerance: if you drink regularly in a moderate fashion, you will metabolize alcohol more efficiently;.

Alcohol in body: It depends on genetic predisposition. Some people has enormous amount of enzymes to digest alcohol rapidly and not get drunk with +++ beers while other cannot tolerate more than 2B due to lack of that enzyme, leading to very slow elimination of alcohol from the body. Women have half of men's enzyme to digest alcohol.

Rule of thumb: This is a surprisingly complicated question, as it turns out, in terms of physiology. To make a long story short, the rule of thumb is that it takes about one hour for the average person to clear one "standard drink" (about 1/2 an ounce of ethanol). This equates to 12 ounces of beer (3.2%), 5 ounces of wine and 1.5 ounces of whiskey.

About 3-5 hrs: That is about consistent with 3 (x 12 ounce) beers (or other equivalent alcoholic drinks). Depending on your body size (and % body fat, which i will be courteous & not ask), can metabolize about 3/4 to 1 drink-equivalent per hour. Can be slower if on meds, have liver disease, are american indian or certain asian descents.

Alcohol: It all depends on your liver's health. But, eight ounces is a large drink or a large amount to drink in one setting. You will test positive by urine for at least one week. Blood tests will be longer and hair tests will be permanent.

It depends: it depends on how fast your body metabolizes it and how much you have ingested. usually men metabolize it faster than woman. It usually takes 1-2 hours for each drink to get metabolized.

How long does alcohol stay in your system? Does how much you consume mean it's in your system longer? Vice versa ?

Depends on test: If only blood alcohol levels are checked, those are usually normal at about 12 hours after last drink, sooner if amount imbibed is small. Urine test for etg may be positive for 5 day after drinking. In a chronic drinker CDT test may be positive for 2 weeks. See this site for rate of alcohol clearance from blood: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1940231

Dr. Singh is right as usual. The speed of clearance also depends on your health (state of your liver, for example), other meds, supplements or recreational drugs you are taking,
