In general, hours...: It is hard to tell how long it takes for alcohol to leave a particular person's body, but in general, it's about 1 hour for each drink. Some people get a higher blood alcohol level (bac) than other people do, despite the same number of drinks, so will take hours longer to return to normal. So, a bac of 0.08 will take 5 hours to go away, dropping 0.016 per hour, and bac of 1.0 will take 6.25 hours.

Rule of thumb...: The rule of thumb is one hour per "standard drink" for a normal-sized individual. A "standard drink" is a shot of whiskey, a 5 oz glass of wine, or a 12 oz beer. Again, this is just a rule of thumb. The actual rate of clearance depends on adept your liver is at breaking it down.
