No, a trans-vaginal: Ultrasound for nuchal translucency was done to help assess risk for down syndrome, the age-related risk for which is 1 in 50 at 43. Aneuploidy, an abnormal number of chromosomes, is the leading genetic cause of first-trimester miscarriage ; birth defects. Down syndrome is not the only aneuploidy, but increased fluid in the fetal nuchal fold is a sign of increased risk of down syndrome.
