A member asked:

How do doctors know if a stone is lodged in the common bile duct and/or the pancreatic ducts? is ercp the only way to know for sure?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Maging studies: Liver function studies and history can give a strong indication that the pt has a common duct stone. At surgery for cholecystectomy, a cholangiogram can show a cbd stone. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (mrcp) is being done as a noninvasive test to find cbd stones prior to ercp. Sometimes only ERCP gives the answer.
