Esophageal spasm: Acid reflux, commonly known as gerd occurs when acid moves from your stomach and into your esophagus which usually causes discomfort the characteristic "heart burn". An irritated esophagus may also spasm which can causes a fluttering/quivering sensation and requires the same treatment as acid reflux. Palpitations may be mistaken a spasm of your esophagus.
