Dr. Alvin Lin answered

Keep moving: Treatment of pressure sores/wounds/ulcers from sitting in a wheelchair are exactly the same as treatment of pressure sores/wounds/ulcers from laying in bed: start moving around & keep moving. Don't remain in any position for more than a few minutes. Allow blood to circulate everywhere there's pressure (sitting or laying). Stay hydrated. Eat lots of nutritious food including protein to allow healin.

No pressure no sore: Pressure sores are a common problem in wheelchair bound patients. Treatment depends on the depth of the sore; if very deep and the patient is compliant, it may require an operation. However, the best approach is prevention: a correct wheelchair pad and periodic wheelchair pushups can prevent many of these. If they occur, early treatment can prevent the need for an operation.
