I have stabbing/shooting pain in my left ribcage/back. sometimes the pain will travel. it is off and on and has been happening for years. what is it?

Hard to be sure: It sounds like you are having muscle related pain in chest and upper back it could be because of activity or position of your head and neck , when you sleep. Try to figure out if you did any heavy lifting or any thing unusual next time the pain returns to understand what brings it on. I hope it helps.
