Likely a virus: It is likely caused by a virus. Antibiotics are of no help in this situation, as they cannot treat viral infections. Use ibuprofen, tylenol, (acetaminophen) chloraseptic spray, etc for pain relief. If still not better, your doctor can prescribe some other things to help the sore throat pain.
