Varies: Immediately- if you have irregular cycles or no periods, you had a tubal ligation or your partner had a vasectomy and possibly if you are over 44 yrs of age 6 months if you are 35 yrs of age or older, or have history of a pelvic infection, multiple pelvic surgeries or endometriosis 1 year of you are under 35 years of age.

Female age and ...: Up to a year of trying if under 35, six months if 35-39, right away if 40 or older. Not everyone would agree on the last group but fertility drops every year after age 40 and 41-42 year olds do better with fertility treatment with own eggs than 43+. See specialist if any obvious issue: irregular periods, abnormal semen analysis, endometriosis, pid/chlamydia, smoker, ovary surgery, 2 miscarriages.
