COPD...: The biggest risk factor for chronic obstructed pulmonary disease is a history of smoking. If you have never smoked, there is a genetic form of COPD called alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. This is less common and is a consideration when COPD is diagnosed in a younger person or someone with no smoking history or if there is a family history of this disease.

Smoking: Smoking is the primary cause of COPD in the us. There are also other potential causes including an specific enzyme deficiency, working in an industry with high amounts of dust and particulates. Poorly treated or untreated asthma can eventually become COPD after many years. Check the american lung association for more info. Good luck.
