Rule out DVT: The most dangerous thing to rule out (assuming no trauma to the leg) is deep vein thrombosis, or blood clot. This is evaluated by doppler ultrasound. Once this is ruled out, then other more common, but non life-threatening musculoskeletal conditions can be evaluated.
